DancinDogg Shot Making Simulator Review

I just got the Dancin Dogg unit this week. Supposedly the "new and improved" Optishot unit with the 3DD simulation environment. The company has yet to release the new software. I was pretty sure this was the case as the website hints at it but doesn't make it clear. They promise a free upgrade in January 2009 when its supposed to be released. Got it for under $300 US door to door, so I figured I'd bite.
Accuracy actually seems pretty good. I played around with it for a half hour with a sand wedge (and no ball) in my living room, and it seemed to pick up on different swing paths, speeds etc. Graphics on the dashboard are pretty horrible, but like I said, this is still the old software. We'll see if and when they release the new version how much it improves.
In a less than ideal lighting environment (according to what they recommend) I'd say there was less than a 5% rate of not picking up a swing. I had the best results with all the lights off. I was standing in front of our home theater screen so this worked better anyway.
The interface with Tiger Woods '08 was pretty cool. I'll have to play around with the settings a bit more, but with the settings recommended by DD, I was uable to make John Daly hit the ball anywhere but dead straight, no matter what the shape/path of my actual swing was. I read somewhere that if you set the difficulty to the highest level, this will change, but since this was my first experience with the game, I didn't attempt to change it. I was having too much fun.
Once I get the thing set up with a mat so it's at the right level, and am able to take full swings with all my clubs I'll update this. But for now, I'll say that for less than the price of a few rounds on the fancy public courses around here, it'll provide me with plenty of entertainment over the winter.What I like:
It's releatively inexpensive.
It provides a chance to swing a club at home, with a real ball and enough feedback that it might actually give me the opportunity to improve my game a little.
The game interface loks like it'll provide hours of fun for me and my golf buddies. A bottle of scotch, some cigars and this thing will make Saturday afternoons pretty darn fun.
Pretty small and portable. I think it'll be pretty easy to take to a friend's house or the range (covered booths with flourescent lighting). There is also no external power supply needed, gets its juice from the usb connection, so a laptop is all you need.
What I don't like:
Current software is awful. Functional, just ugly.
It's LOUD. Makes a pretty significant THWACK when the clubhead hits the surface of the unit. I can see getting yelled at if my wife is in the house. Well, that happens anyway.
Tiger woods game doesn't give the option to not show the golfer, kinda takes away from the illusion that you're actually on the course. This has nothing to do with the unit itself, just pointing it out.All in all, I'd say for the money spent, its worth it.**Update
Ok, turns out I was right about the yelling thing. Sandwedge slipped out of my hand. Was using one of my old clubs, badly in need of a new grip. Also, all my gloves were in my golf bag, down in the trunk of the car. Yes, I know. Recipe for disaster. Anyway, it flew down the hall, bounced off the wall and knocked the glass globe off the ceiling light fixture. The kind that looks like a cut crystal ball with a hole in the top and is held in place by 3 set screws. I say it knocked it off because it didn't break somehow. Nor did the bulb. According to the Black box (Dancing dogg) the clubhead was traveling around 60 a millisecond before it took flight. Slight inside out, square face. 80 odd yards. I'm guessing the club would have covered at least half that, given a clear flight path and clearance from the tower. Somehow managed not to destroy the 10 wedding pictures on the wall on its way to the ceiling lamp. No matter, the Dancin Dogg is in indefinite time out. So much for my dreams of Scotch soaked Saturday afternoons...
Anyway, putting the Tiger Woods player on "Expert" setting seems to make the ball flight more realistic. I can't figure out how to make it stay on one club tho. Wanted to practice on 17 at Sawgrass (the island Green) but after every shot it would automatically default to the driver. Kind of a pain to have to walk over to the laptop and select the wedge every time. Kinda silly too, why would John Daly pull out a driver on a 135 yard par 3? Anyway, if I ever get my toy back I'll keep the updates coming. For now I think I'll just go pout.
